Five things about notable Michigan women

Mary Chase Perry Stratton, an important part of the arts and crafts art movement and a Detroit Institute of Arts trustee, is highlighted in a story about Women's History Month. Stratton, born in 1867 in Hancock, Mich., taught at Wayne State University and founded the ceramics department at the University of Michigan. She opened Pewabic Pottery in 1903 with Horace Caulkins, the inventor of a special high-heat kiln.
